DIY Build Guide

How to Build an Aquaponics System at Home

Step-by-step guide for beginners — complete parts list, science-backed design ratios, and instructions in plain English.

Choose Your System Type

Not sure which system is right for you? Pick one below — each tab shows the parts and steps for that specific build.

Media Bed System — Best for Beginners

The media bed is the most forgiving system you can build. Fill a container with grow media, flood it with fish water on a timer, drain it back. The grow media handles filtration so you don't need separate equipment. Perfect for your first build.

1
Size your fish tank

Plan for 0.5 lbs of fish per gallon of tank water at harvest. A 200-gallon tank supports 100 lbs of fish — plenty for a family system.

2
Match your grow bed volume

1:1 rule — your grow bed should hold the same volume as your fish tank. 200 gal tank needs 200 gal of grow bed space.

3
Install your plumbing

Submersible pump in fish tank pumps water up to grow beds. Bell siphon drains beds back automatically — no timer needed.

4
Add grow media and aeration

Fill beds with hydroton or pea gravel. Add an air pump and airstones to keep fish tank oxygen levels up.

5
Cycle the system (4-6 weeks)

Before you add your full fish stock, let beneficial bacteria establish. Test daily for ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate.

6
Add fish and plants

Start with tilapia and lettuce — the most forgiving combo. You can grow tomatoes, herbs, and more as you get comfortable.
